Dear Friend of Health Legacy of Cleveland (HLC),

Thanks to the generosity of individual and corporate donors, HLC has raised over $400,000 since 2004 for direct scholarships through the Health Legacy of Cleveland Award and Scholarship Dinners.

We seek your support of the 2009 Health Legacy of Cleveland Award and Scholarship Dinner being held on Sunday, April 26, 2009, 6 PM to 9 PM at the InterContinental Hotel and Conference Center in Cleveland. Individual seating begins at $150. Corporate sponsorships begin at $1,500.

HLC will honor the living legacy of our founder, Oscar E. Saffold, M.D., who has distinguished himself in many ways, among which has been as one of the three Founders and President of Personal Physician Care of Ohio, one of the early African American physician owned and operated HMOs in Ohio. Dr. Saffold is currently in the private practice of Dermatology and enjoys mentoring and supporting students. As an alumnus of Fisk University and Meharry Medical School he enthusiastically supports the students from historically black colleges and universities.

HLC supports African American medical and dental students who want to return to the greater Cleveland area to practice, particularly (but not exclusively) those from historically black schools. We also support high school and college students who have shown an interest in health related careers. Our scope includes the following:

• Nine High School scholarship winners are being supported through their 4 year undergraduate
  studies pursuing health professions.
• Our 2007 fundraising event sponsors created two new named scholarships: The Charles R.
  Drew, M.D. scholarship, sponsored by Cleveland Clinic and the Jefferson J. Jones,
  D.M.D. Case Dental School Scholarship, sponsored by the Case Endodontic Alumni.
• In 2004 University Hospitals Health System presenting sponsorship created the Edgar B.
  Jackson, Jr., M.D. Scholarship. We are proud of the first recipient of this four year scholarship,
  HLC scholar Brandon A. Roberts, who graduated in May 2008 with his M.D. degree.
  Also, HLC Scholar, Shelly Blue, graduated in May 2007 with her D.M.D. degree
  and has been a resident at University Hospitals Case Medical Center this past year.
• Most recently we collaborated on the development of a pipeline program with the Cleveland
  Clinic as the inaugural Charles R. Drew Saturday Academy. This program prepares
  thirty, Black and Hispanic, talented high school students each year, for the eventual practice
  of medicine. These groups are now classified as under represented minorities in
  medicine (URMM).

HLC needs your support to provide scholarships and purposeful, public programming aimed at inspiring Cleveland area students to become physicians and dentists. Registration for our fundraising event will be available online at www.healthlegacycleveland.org starting in the late fall 2008. Please contact a board member or Cynthia Clark, Executive Director, regarding your early sponsorship inquiries. Formal invitations will be sent out in early 2009.
